The somewhat aptly named show ‘Impressive’ is an entertaining hour of impersonations, singing & comedy from the talented Jess Robinson.
The show kicks-off in rapid fashion as Robinson packs in impressions of well-kent women from around the world during four minutes of song. Racing through the voices at somewhat breakneck speed to fit them in offered 99 problems – but a man, she noted, wasn’t one.
Robinson uses the show to talk – and sing – about her recent divorce from what she describes as her ‘practice husband’ and the impact it has had getting to know who she really is.
The journey over the last twelve months since the demise of her marriage – ironically following last year’s Edinburgh show – takes the audience through the five steps of grief – Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression, and the finale, Acceptance – based on the work of Elisabeth Kübler-Ross (who bears an uncanny resemblance to one of her family members!).
Ok, perhaps a random topic for a show laced with wholehearted goodness but you quickly remember that it’s August in Edinburgh.
From the delightful rendition of Songbird as a tribute to Amy Whinehouse to her ace card in Natalie Cassidy (Sonia from Eastenders) singing Free Nelson Mandela, the show really does have something for everyone.
So, what was the reason ‘practice husband’ earned him title? Ahhh, you’ve still got a few nights left to find out…
