A goal from substitute Callum Wright in added time secured all three points for Hibs at Ibrox this afternoon.
The victory was Hibs third in three seasons and also the first time a side managed by Derek McInnes had lost to Hibs at home.
David Gray made four changes to the starting XI that won in midweek.
Kanayo Megwa, Josh Campbell, Ante Šuto and Thibault Klidjé replaced Felix Passlack, Martin Boyle, Owen Elding and Nathan Lowe.
Three of the four dropped down to the bench but Boyle dropped out of the squad due to injury.
Another name missing was Grant Hanley who has been linked with a move to Kilmarnock.
On a positive note, Jamie McGrath was listed amongst the substitutes.
Derek McInnes made six changes in first competitive match at Ibrox in charge of Rangers.
These included a first start for Vanja Dragojevic, at right back and Olwethu Makhanya at centre back.
Former Hearts due Lawrence Shankland and Cammy Devlin also started.
And in the electric atmosphere at Ibrox Hibs took the lead in the 11th minute.
A Jordan Obita corner from the left culminated in a tussle between Vanja Dragojevic and Jason Kerr at the back post. Play continued but the referee was called to the monitor and after a check he awarded a penalty kick.
Campbell took responsibility and calmly fired the ball into the net to the delight of the travelling supporters.
At the other end Youssef Chermiti fired an effort just wide of the right-hand post before Vanja Dragojevic did likewise from 20 yards.
Devlin was lucky to avoid a yellow card for a blatant foul on Campbell to stop a Hibs attack.
The home side almost equalised in the 23rd minute but Megwa cleared a Chermiti strike off the line after some excellent wing play from new signing Daisuke Yokota.
A corner from the right was cleared into the path of Tuur Rommens’s and his 25-yard volley was palmed clear by Raphael Sallinger. In the follow up Chermiti picked up an injury after he slid off the park and clattered into the advertising boards and was stretchered off.
At the other end Suto set up Klidge but his effort on the turn flew inches over the bar.
Dragojevic then tried his luck from 30-yards but his effort went narrowly wide.
A subline pass from Fernandez found Nico Raskin but his effort on the stretch flew over the bar.
Just before the break Hibs broke clear and Campbell’s shot struck Fernandez on the arm but nothing was given.
From the resultant corner the ball fell to Suto but his strike was deflected past for a corner and the half-time whistle blew.
The Rangers fans made their displeasure know to the players and manager as they left the field.
Rangers made a change at the break with Mohamed Diomande on for Dragojevic.
Within seconds of the restart Suto was harshly booked for a minor challenge on the halfway line.
Referee Don Robertson spoke to Josh Mulligan after challenge on Devlin but TV replays showed there was no contact.
Mulligan then did well to dispossess Shankland before finding Klidge but the Rangers defence managed to clear the danger.
Sallinger then did well to save from Diomande as the home side continued to press forward with Hibs content to hit on the break.
After a spell of pressure Rankin curled the ball over the bar from 20-yards.
Just before the hour mark Gray made a triple substitution.
Nathan Lowe, Callum Wright and McGrath replaced Klidje, Suto, and Campbell.
Moments later Shankland almost levelled but his effort was well saved by Sallinger and Mulligan cleared a Fernandez header off the line.
Mulligan showed his skills at the other end and almost set up Adam Mayor after winning a tackle inside the area.
With a quarter of the game to go Djeidi Gassama and Thelo Aasgaard replaced Raskin and Yokota.
Mayor produced a sensational block to deny Shankland but the referee’s whistle had already gone for a handball by Devlin.
Aasgaard went close from outside the box but once again the strike was off target.
With 15-minutes remaining Passlack replaced Megwa and McGrath went close with a half volley.
Moments later Ross McCrorie replaced Findlay Curtis for the hosts,
Mulligan tried to lob the keeper after some good work by Lowe but his effort was to high.
Devlin then produced a tremendous last ditch tackle to stop Mayor breaking down the left wing.
Then with six minutes remaining a slack pass by Passlack was intercepted in midfield. The ball went to Gassama and his low cross was fired into his own net by Chaiwa.
Ranger with the home fans backing continued to press for a winner and Sallinger did well to stop a Shankland header.
With a minute remaining Elding replaced Mayor.
Rangers continued to look for a winner but in added time Hibs took all three points.
Elding won possession deep in his own half and calmly found Chaiwa. His long pass found Lowe who passed to Wright and his shot took a little nick off Tuur Rommens on its way past Ivor Pandur sparking mayhem in the away end.
After the final whistle Mulligan told Premier Sports: “Massive result. It’s the first time ever Hibs have come here three seasons in a row and got the win so we knew what it meant before the game. I’m delighted to get the result.
“[After Rangers equalised] you always think, ‘don’t lose another one’ but we know the quality we’ve got, like you saw on the break.
“Just delighted to win. To come here and get a win, this is one of the toughest places to go.”
Wright added: “The performances have been good so far this season.
“The lads are very good, we just need to start picking up the points. Two wins from our last two, which is good.
“It’s an exciting project, I bought into it. I’m really excited to be here.”
