Berwick Bandits have announced the signing of in-form Australian reserve Reid Battye as they begin team building for next season.
The 25-year-old former superbike champion has been a huge hit with the Borders club and, despite missing over two months of the season after suffering a serious back injury, he will end his British debut season in the main body of the team on an average over five points.
He has collected 64 points and 13 bonus points in August and enjoyed points-laden guest appearances, most notably for Glasgow.
Australian racers like former three-time world champion, Jason Crump, and Craig Boyce championed Battye, who only seriously took up speedway four years ago.
Berwick owner Jamie Courtney initially signed him after some impressive performances in last winter’s Australian Championship and he said: “You could see there was a really talented rider there.
“We thought, and said publicly, that Reid could be a slow burner but, despite a very serious injury, he has proved to be anything but.
“His form at Shielfield Park has been out of this world, but he has also been able to adapt to away tracks very quickly.”
Courtney added: “No question, there are plenty of clubs that would love to have Reid in their colours next year, but he’s a 2027 Bandit.”
Battye said: “I quickly realised that there is something special about both the town of Berwick and the speedway club.
“As soon as I arrived I felt at home and have really enjoyed my speedway, even the nights when it hasn’t gone quite to plan.
“I’d heard some noise about 2027, but there was never any question that I’d be back with the Bandits.
“There’s at least one cup final, we’re aiming to make it two, left to race in my first British season. I’m very excited about that and to have next season settled so quickly.”
