Police in Musselburgh have seized two Surron bikes.
The action was taken on Friday 24 July 2026 following reports that they had been ridden illegally and dangerously on public roads.
Officers said that this not only endangered the public, but the riders too.
A police spokesperson said: “These bikes cannot be used in a public place as they are the off-road version of the Surron E-Bike – meaning it can only be ridden on private land with the landowner’s permission.
“The streets of East Lothian are public spaces, and these bikes are NOT road legal.
“There are road legal models, however, these should have a registration plate, a speedometer, mirrors and lights, and they are restricted to 30mph, riders must be at least 16 years old with a valid provisional driving license and CBT certificate.
“Please call 101 if you have any information or wish to report these bikes being ridden in a dangerous manner in public spaces.
“Alternatively, you can use the ‘contact us’ form on the Police Scotland website. We will be seizing bikes that are used illegally wherever possible.”
