Stenhousemuir goalkeeper, Darren Jamieson, defied Livingston who crashed out of the Premier Sports Cup in dramatic fashion at Ochilview, losing a penalty shootout 3-1 in Group E after the sides had been deadlocked at 0-0 in regulation time.
Livingston-born Jamieson, who made 85 appearances for the Almondvale club between 2010 and 2016, saved a Robbie Muirhead penalty in normal time and the 35-year-old, produced several other quality stops.
Overall, Livingston have not lost a game in four in the Cup yet they are out of the competition.
Glenn Whelan, the Almondvale club’s head coach, now turns his attention to the visit of Queen’s Park next Saturday (15.00) as The Lions open their campaign in the Championship.
The Irishman was naturally disappointed at exiting the competition, particularly as goalkeeper, Jerome Prior, did not have much to do, but he said: “We landed on a goalkeeper who made three or four great saves and we missed a penalty, and I am disappointed for Robbie as he is in a good run of form.
“You have to give them credit. They came with a plan and the plan worked for them.
“We can’t be sore losers, we take it on the chin, now we go again for the start of our (league) campaign.”
The 42-year-old saw enough in the second half of the game at Ochilview to kick-on and he believe that Livingston can be a threat in the league.
Dublin-born Whelan does not think his men have been under too much pressure in the Cup games, but he knows there are “certain aspects” where Livingston need to improve.
They need, he added, to be a little more creative and be more positive in key areas of the pitch.
He said: “The gloves are off next week. It’s about starting the campaign really well.”
