Hibs recorded their first victory at Celtic Park since 2010 thanks to a late goal from substitute Kai Andrews.
David Gray made one change to his starting XI following last weekend’s victory over St Mirren with Martin Boyle taking over from Dane Scarlett in attack.
For Celtic, Kasper Schmeichel kept his place despite being at fault for two goals against Stuttgart in the Europa League play-off first leg.
Martin O’Neill made two changes with Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain making his first start and Yang Hyun-Jun replacing Daizen Maeda who dropped to the bench and Paulo Bernardo who missed out.
Celtic started on the front foot and Benjamin Nygren had the first chance but was unable to get the ball under control, then Warren O’Hora did well to intercept a dangerous cross from the left.
At the other end Schmeichel inexplicably passed straight to Owen Elding and the youngster tried to set up Boyle, but his touch let him down and the danger was cleared.
Hibs continued to press and Felix Passlack’s low cross found Nicky Cadden, but his goal-bound shot was blocked brilliantly by Julian Araujo.
Sebastian Tounekti then sent a dangerous ball to the back post which was cleared the head of Jack Iredale.
Nygren was inches away from opening the scoring with a powerful strike from the edge of the box, but the ball took the slightest deflection off the boot of Rocky Bushiri.
Hibs took the lead in the 24th minute against the run of play. Boyle found Nicky Cadden and his brilliant cross from the left was headed home by Passlack.
Moments later Boyle almost added a second but was denied by Schmeichel.
Raphael Sallinger picked up a knock coming out for a Kieran Tierney cross and collided with Yang Hyun-Jun. After some treatment he was able to continue.
Tomas Cvancara went close with a backwards header from a Tierney cross but his effort went wide.
Just before the break Cvancara missed a great chance to equalise but miss-hit his effort from six yards.
And just when it looked as though Hibs would go into half-time in the lead Celtic equalised when Tierney’s ball from the left Nygren headed home from close range.
Celtic started the second-half brightly and Sallinger did well to save a Nygren strike.
Nicky Cadden was shown a yellow card for a mistimed sliding challenge on Yang Hyun-Jun.
After some sustained Celtic pressure Nygren went close from long range.
On the hour mark Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate replaced Cvancara and Oxlade-Chamberlain.
And Martin Boyle and Owen Elding made way for Dane Scarlett and Arne Suto.
Bushiri managed to get his knee in the way of a Yang Hyun-Jun shot as Celtic looked to score from eight yards.
Auston Trusty was shown a red card by Matthew McDermid following an altercation with Jamie McGrath before a Celtic corner, Trusty appeared to lash out at the Hibs man using his hand, connecting with McGrath’s arm.
Then with three minutes remaining Hibs took the lead after Ante Suto llaid the ball back to fellow substitute Kai Andrews who fired the ball into the net from the edge of the area.
And Hibs held on to take all three points.
