Match 1 of the 2026 match fishing season organised by the Scottish Federation of Sea Anglers (SFSA) encouraged 20 fishermen to take part at Newhaven.
Slate grey skies and a biting wind welcomed the competitors to the Western Harbour at 14.30 for registration by Mike Horn, president of the SFSA, and his son Chris.
The four-hour match started at 16.00 and conditions were tricky with various baits used in this catch, measure and release match.
The slippery breakwater made wearing studded waters essential and several Scottish internationals were in the quality field, including Mike and Chris Horn (both Kirkcaldy) and Ian Campbell (Falkirk) plus David Cooper (Edinburgh). Cooper has fished in the world championships.
Anglers from as far afield as Arbroath cast a line and also in the field was Scotland junior international, Eryk Janik, a pupil at nearby Trinity Academy.
Chris Cooper and Gordon Lyall were also there. Cooper fished the breakwater on Friday night to win Match 2 of the Edinburgh New Year Shore League with 19 fish for 418 points.
Second was Lyall with 12 fish for 256 points and third Stewart Falconer (Arbroath) with eight fish for 170 points. He also fished on Saturday.
The longest fish on Friday, incidentally was landed by Kevin McNish and it was a 36cm codling.
