Hibs head coach David Gray admitted his side were ‘really poor’, particularly in the opening 20-25 minutes at Fir Park last night.
Two goals in three minutes condemned 10-man Hibs to defeat, in what was a disappointing display against Motherwell.
When reviewing the game, Head Coach Gray gave his thoughts on the performance.
“We got what we deserved for our first 20-25 minute display. We were really poor. We started the game too slow and played into Motherwell’s hands.
“That said, some of the decisions went against us as well and that compounded it. I could talk about the penalty, but it was really poor from us in terms of how that came about.
“When we went down to 10 men, and we found ourselves 2-0 down, the players huffed and puffed. We kept two strikers on the pitch to carry a threat, but the reality is we didn’t do enough to get back into the game.
“There was a big moment for us just before half-time to get back into the game, but we didn’t take it. Other than that, we didn’t carry enough of a threat to get back into the game.
“We will certainly go over the performance straight away and everyone will be in tomorrow. We were too slow, took too many touches and there were too many unforced errors from a lot of players. I won’t be sweeping this under the carpet.”
The first half was full of controversy with a number of key moments going to VAR. Gray provided his thoughts on those.
“I don’t like using excuses and blaming officials, and I think the penalty is avoidable from our point of view. We lose the ball in a really poor area by dribbling in the middle of the pitch. I think the handball is really harsh because I don’t think the shot is going on target, it’s going wide. It’s certainly not deliberate. I am confused why it was given and it shows the inconsistency again.
“We then found ourselves 2-0 down from some really sloppy play from our point of view. Motherwell were on the front foot, and we played into their hands with a bunch of errors at that point.
“On the red card, we all signed up to VAR and the offsides are factually whether we think the lines are good or bad. It’s then an accidental trip, so by the letter of the law it’s a red card.
“Then there’s a frustration there because a Motherwell player got away with one. The incident was right in front of me. He threw his head back to back-headbutt Jack Iredale. I think he can count himself a lucky boy because I saw it with my own eyes.”
