Edinburgh Bicycle Coop on Rodney Street in Canonmills has closed – the second branch to close in a year.
The shop, sold bikes, electric bikes, clothing components and accessories, and was the only place in Scotland where you could demo a Brompton Electric bike, being a Brompton Premier Store.
The Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative Limited, company number SP1932RS, is listed on Companies House as a registered society, but there are no entries on the register to indicate what is happening with the employee-owned business.
On their website the business is promoted as “owned by cyclists for cyclists”.
The shop is now empty, and customers are being redirected to other branches.
This is Scotland’s longest-running worker co-operative, originally established in Edinburgh in 1977 as a bicycle repair service by founders, Gerry, Chris, and Morag.
There are other shops present within the city, with one on Alvanley Terrace, and they also operate the Giant Store on Hamilton Place. There are other branches in Stirling – which was only taken over a year ago – Aberdeen and Newcastle.
Closure earlier this year
Just 10 months ago the business closed their shop in Leeds, saying: “This decision has not been made lightly. Despite our best efforts, the extremely difficult trading conditions of recent years have made it impossible to continue operating sustainably.
“Like many small, independent businesses, we’ve faced rising costs and changing market pressures that have simply become too challenging to overcome.
“We’re immensely grateful to everyone who has helped us — from our customers to local businesses and fellow cyclists. Your support has meant the world to us, and it’s been a privilege to ride alongside you.
“Thank you for being part of our story.
“May the road rise to meet you and may the wind be always at your back.
“Edinburgh Bicycle Coop”
According to an email sent in to Edi.bike by a reader: “The business has been struggling for a while and has been in a process to find a cash injection and/or a buyer. This process concluded on Friday 18/9/2026 and unfortunately no offers came forward. An investor approached EBC to work with them to put forward an offer. As a result, an offer has been made, and EBC is waiting to find out if that offer can proceed in line with the strict regulatory arrangements covering the insolvency process.
“In summary, the Head Office staff and Canonmills staff do not form part of that offer, and it means that the Head Office function, Warehouse, Online and Canonmills Store will cease to exist. The staff who work in these locations will be made redundant and the office and shop will close.
“As these things move at speed, the Insolvency Practitioners (Administrators) take over the process and handle all such matters going forward.”
We have asked several times for comment from Edinburgh Bicycle Cooperative and have had no response.
