Five Sisters Zoo will celebrate their 20th birthday, and their local MP, Gregor Poynton, visited them to offer his congratulations.
The West Calder Zoo, which first opened in 2005, has grown to become one of West Lothian’s most popular attractions, welcoming thousands of visitors each year while championing conservation, education, and animal welfare. Earlier this year, Five Sisters reached the final stages of the prestigious Great British Wildlife Restoration Award.
The zoo’s 20th anniversary celebrations will take place on Saturday 27 September.
During his visit, Mr Poynton met with staff and volunteers who help make the zoo such a special part of the community. He also had the unique opportunity to meet and feed Scotland’s only Asiatic Black Bear, Yampil, named after the village in Ukraine where he was rescued.
The MP recorded a special message of congratulations for staff, volunteers, and supporters, which will form part of a video montage being screened at the zoo’s anniversary event on Saturday.
Mr Poynton said: “Five Sisters Zoo is one of West Lothian’s real treasures. For 20 years it has been more than just a fantastic family day out, it has played a huge role in conservation, education, and supporting our local economy. The dedication of the staff, volunteers, and supporters has made it a true community asset we can all be proud of. I want to congratulate everyone involved on reaching this milestone and look forward to seeing the zoo continue to thrive for many more years to come.”
