Hibs came within minutes of creating history and reaching the Conference League group stages but after taking a 3-1 lead, an added time goal denied them a famous victory in Warsaw.
Hibs went into the fixture with a one-goal deficit from last week’s game at Easter Road.
Head coach David Gray made two changes to his starting line up. Jamie McGrath and Nicky Cadden replaced Jack Iredale who dropped to the bench and Josh Campbell who was not listed in the squad.
Legia Warsaw are unchanged but are without Japan international Ryoya Morishita, who was sold to Blackburn Rovers this week.
There was a fantastic atmosphere inside the stadium with the 2,000 Hibs fans making themselves heard.
Hibs started on the front foot and almost took the lead when a free-kick dropped to Warren O’Hora who managed to toe-poke the ball goalwards but the Legia eeper saved at the second attempt.
But after a bright start from the visitors, it was the hosts that took the lead against the run of play when Legia winger Vahan Bichakhchyan fired a powerful low strike into the bottom right corner of the net from the 18-yard-line.
From then Legia controlled the game and almost added a second when Rafal Augustyniak’s long range effort was tipped past the post by Jordan Smith.
Martin Boyle then headed a Chris Cadden cross wide.
Augustyniak then tried his luck again from distance but his effort was pushed away by Smith.
Just before the break Josh Mulligan was booked for a late challenge.
Hibs started the second half on the front foot and scored an incredible three times in the space of 11-minutes
Four minutes after the restart Nicky Cadden’s corner was headed home by Rocky Bushiri.
Nine minutes later Bushiri causes carnage in the Legia box again, using his body to set up Martin Boyle who smashed in an aggregate leveller making Hibs all time top scorer in European matches.
Then two minutes after that, fresh off the bench, Miguel Chaiwa beat three defenders and unleashed a stunning finish into the far corner.
The drama continued when Junior Hoilett was shown a straight red card but the referee was sent to the monitor and the card was downgraded to yellow.
Hibs continued to press forward looking for a fourth and Boyle’s volley hits the bar from a good 40 yards out before Mulligan was denied by the Legia keeper.
Seven minutes of added time was awarded and Legia took advantage when Juergen Elitim got on the end of a cross and fired the ball past Smith from eight yards.
Elie Youan replaces Dylan Levitt for extra time.
The hom side then grabbed an equaliser on the night when the Hibs defence couldn’t del with a cross and the ball fell to Mileta Rajovic who lashed it into the roof of the net.
Substitute Thibault Klidje then latched on to a tremendous through ball from Chaiwa but with a defender on his case, and he lifted it agonisingly over the bar.
Jan Ziolkowski caught Bowie and picks up a second booking but Hoilett’s free-kick struck the wall and was cleared.
In the dying seconds Bowie’s header was saved brilliantly by Kacper Tobiasz and the Poles held on for the victory.
