Artist in Residence – Wendy Helliwell – Every Saturday and Sunday in September (1pm -3pm)
Virgin Hotels Edinburgh’s newest Artist in Residence is local creative Wendy Helliwell. Her artwork will be displayed along the red staircase leading to the Oculus Lounge. Wendy will be available to greet guests every Saturday and Sunday to discuss her artwork
Venue: Oculus Lounge.

Edinburgh-born Wendy Helliwell is a visual artist whose work is deeply influenced by the fashion, pop culture, and advertising of the 1980s, especially the glossy pages of fashion magazines like Vogue. Primarily self-taught, Wendy honed her skills through courses at the Edinburgh College of Art.

Wendy’s art both celebrates and critiques consumerist culture by deconstructing and reassembling fashion magazine imagery, often on repurposed fabric. She employs a diverse and sustainable approach, using a variety of materials, including throwaway items, to create layered, colourful, three-dimensional works that capture the striking allure of the original magazine advertisements. Her work highlights the preciousness of these tangible cultural references, using bright colours and bold text to initially seduce the viewer. Her playful and humorous recreations also carry a darker undercurrent that prompts reflection on materialistic habits.
