The BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra under the always brilliant baton of Sir Donald Runnicles performed a selection of songs from Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn sung by mezzo soprano Annika Schlicht and Baritone Thomas Lehman.

These were touching, sometimes delicate renditions of subtle quality. A wonderful first half.

After the interval, the orchestra absolutely filled the hall with the enormous 9th Symphony of Anton Bruckner in honour of Sir Donald’s 70th birthday.

Along with Mahler & Beethoven, Bruckner is one of my favourite composers. This rendition enthralled me as always and left me buzzing. Marvellous.
