A lot has changed since the 2019 election, but it is worth looking back at the previous results before tonight’s numbers are announced.
Deidre Brock of the SNP became the constituency’s MP in the SNP landslide of 2015 and successfully defended her position in two subsequent elections. In 2019, Ms Brock defended her seat convincingly with 25,925 votes and nearly 44% of the vote share. This represented a fairly substantial increase on her 2017 performance with almost a 10% increase of the vote share won for the SNP.
Second place in the poll was hotly contested between two candidates. While Iain McGill of the Scottish Conservatives won over 11,000 voters as he stood in yet another election, Scottish Labour’s Gordon Munro who was a councillor at the time, narrowly became the contest’s runner up with 13,117 votes. While Labour procured about 22% of the vote share, a steep drop from their 2017 vote share of approximately 31%, the Tories procured just over 18%.
Meanwhile, Bruce Wilson of the Scottish Liberal Democrats’ vote share was half that of Labour with a little over 11%, gaining 6,635 votes, and the Scottish Greens had about 3% of the vote share with 1,971 votes.
Robert Spiers of the Brexit Party had 558 votes and about 1% of the vote share, and Renew party candidate Heather Jane Astbury won 138 votes.
