Visit Edinburgh Museums

The council runs nine museums and galleries and cares for 200 monuments. The Nelson Monument has just reopened after refurbishment and is open daily from 10am to 4.30pm – some of the best views of the city are from Calton Hill and from this monument.

However Queensferry Museum will be closed today and The People’s Story Museum will be closed on Wednesday.

This week at the council

Monday, 27 May, 2024

  • 9.30 am Licensing Board – Dean of Guild Court Room – City Chambers
  • This meeting will go on for a considerable part of the day with timed hearings for many applications. These include an application by Historic Environment Scotland to increase the off sales area at Edinburgh Castle, several personal licences which are being brought to the board for review, and also a review of licences issued for premises where fees remain unpaid.

Tuesday, 28 May, 2024

  • 10.00 am Policy and Sustainability Committee – Dean of Guild Court Room – City Chambers
  • The committee will hear about events organised “either wholly or in part” for PRIDE in Edinburgh this month. This will include flying the PRIDE flag above the City Chambers “sending a clear message that Edinburgh is a city where LGBT+ people should feel safe and welcome”. The Council Leadership team will take part in the PRIDE march on 22 June.
  • The committee will also be brought up to speed on the Granton Waterfront Rgeneration Programme and the planning application which will be lodged in June. There is decontamination work to be done on this site and a final business case has to be approved but it is hoped that Cruden Homes East Ltd will be able to start building in summer 2025.
One other matter which may have slipped from the current news agenda is that the Forth Green Freeport will be designated in June after approval by the Scottish and UK Governments.

  • 10.00 am Development Management Sub-Committee – Dean of Guild Court Room – City Chambers
  • One of the applications to be discussed is the Proposal of Application Notice (PAN) for Cramond Road North by developers AMA. This is a long awaited application for a sports led mixed use development on the site which the “Dunf” campus of Moray House once occupied. (See also below for planning consultations this week)

New cycling infrastructure

Many minutes and hours of councillors time have been devoted to what type of bollards or wands should be used in Edinburgh (and the council is still debating what might be used in the Braid Estate) for segregated cycle lanes.
It appears the council had the answer all the time.

Here it is.
