When Skipinnish take to the stage at Edinburgh Castle this summer they will be celebrating their 25th anniversary and they will be accompanied by a special guest.
The Celtic singer will appear with her band before Angus MacPhail and his band follow. The Skipinnish co-founder said: “It is a huge honour for Skipinnish that Karen Matheson and her band will be joining us at Edinburgh Castle. Karen is a true icon of Celtic Music and her unique, beautiful voice has carried Gaelic song across the world. What a wonderful addition to our 25th Anniversary celebrations and a huge treat to our audience.
“This is the biggest show we have ever played and we are so grateful to our fans who have supported us throughout our voyage and given us this chance to perform in a setting beyond the wildest dreams of the two young lads we were in 1999. Of everything I’m looking forward to about this event, by far the most powerful, is the sound of a Skipinnish crowd in full voice resonating around the castle and down the Royal Mile.”
Karen Matheson said: ” I am very excited to be opening for the fantastic Skipinnish, at such an iconic venue…I can’t wait.”
Mark Mackie, Director of Castle Concerts said: “We are delighted to announce that Karen and her band will be special guests with Skipinnish as they celebrate their big birthday with us up at the castle this year for what will be a truly amazing event.”
Jason Barrett, Chief Executive Officer of The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, said: “At the Tattoo, we’re delighted to present both modern and traditional music, and Skipinnish’s Walking on the Waves made for a perfect finale in our 2022 Show, Voices. We are proud to carry on our partnership with the band as we welcome them to our arena for the 2024 Castle Concerts series to celebrate their 25 anniversary.”
The meteoric rise of Skipinnish as a band has seen them reach the very top of the Celtic Music scene. With sell-out shows across the country’s biggest music venues attracting audiences bigger than they could ever have imagined and their chart-topping anthems, including Alive, The Island, Last of the Hunters and Walking on the Waves resonating across the globe, what started as a small ceilidh band has evolved and grown to something huge and unique.
Skipinnish was co-founded in 1999 by Angus MacPhail from Tiree and Lochaber musician Andrew Stevenson. The band has evolved over the years into the current line-up – Angus MacPhail (accordion); Andrew Stevenson (bagpipes); Norrie MacIver (lead singer); Rory Grindlay (drums); Charlotte Printer (bass); Alistair Iain Paterson (piano) and Archie McAllister (fiddle).
