Scottish Water continues with a multi million pound project at a pumping station on McDonald Road where the latest project has included removing a screw pump weighing as much as three African elephants.

The 50-year-old station pumps millions of litres of waste water in the capital and the removal of the screw has required careful planning. The pump weighs 16 tonnes and is the same length as a Lothian bus. A crane was used to lift it out of the ground in a four hour operation.

Steven Boon, Waste Water Operations Manager at Scottish Water said: “We are delighted with the progress we have made so far. This is a complex and challenging project, but we are committed to delivering the best possible service for our customers and the environment.

“The removal of the screw pump is a significant step forward, and we look forward to completing the rest of the work next year.”

A second screw pump still operates but it will be replaced later this year.
