Former teammates at The University of Edinburgh must have been glued to their TV sets as Katie Robertson stepped up to take a penalty shot on her debut for Great Britain.
The Dollar Academy PE teacher, who has taken a year off to press for selection for the Paris Olympics, moved towards the ball from near the half-way line. She had to score to keep the game alive and Robertson tried to outsmart the goalkeeper, Clara Barberi.
She went to one side and attempted to cut back before sending her shot towards goal. The ball hit the goalkeeper and Robertson, from the village of Freuchie in Fife, could not re-gather. Disappointment for Katie and GB in the FIH Hockey Pro League as they lost 2-1 in the best-of-five shootout.
Sophie Hamilton was the only GB player to convert in the pressure shootout with Tessa Howard, Izzy Petter, Hannah French also failing to convert.
Argentina’s scorers were Agustina Albertarrio and Victoria Manuele and the home side dominated the ball in the early stages but GB fashioned the first real chance, earning a penalty corner, but Ansley’s drag flick flew over.
The home side continued to attack in the second quarter but GB’s defence held firm with goalkeeper Sabbie Heesh playing well and she continued that form into the second half as Argentina worked to break the deadlock.
GB relied on breakaways and the scoreline was 0-0 in Santiago del Estro at the final hooter but, overall GB, coached by Scots-born David Ralph, played well against a side ranked No 3 in the world.
This was the opening game of the tournament and it also featured two other former University of Edinburgh players, defender Amy Costello, who had a solid game, and hard-working Sarah Robertson, who won bronze with GB in the last Olympics. Dundonian Charlotte Watson, a former Dundee Wanderers player was also busy up-front.
GB men suffered a 2-1 defeat in their clash with Argentina at the same venue in the same competition.
