Edinburgh City’s victory over Stirling Albion last night leaves them three points clear in second place after the last round of fixtures before the split.
Manager Gary Naysmith made four changes from Saturday’s 3-2 defeat to Queen’s Park with Marc Laird, Liam Brown, Rafa De Vita and Conrad Balatoni replacing Craig Thomson, Liam Henderson, Josh Campbell and Andy Black.
City almost fell behind in the 20th minute when Albion captain Ross McGeachie’s strike was cleared off the line by Brown.
Ten minutes before the break, the Edinburgh side took the lead after a mistake by Albion’s goalkeeper Cammie Binnie who lost possession Ousman See and the on-form striker calmly slid the ball into the empty net.
The hosts almost equalised in the 77th minute but Laird managed to scoop Jordan Allan’s header clear.
The hosts continued to press forward but City held on to secure a valuable three-points.
With the league now splitting into top and bottom halves, City will play champions Queen’s Park, Stirling Albion, Elgin City and Stranraer to determine whether they will achieve a play-off place.
Meanwhile Queen’s Park clinched the Scottish League 2 title with a 0-0 draw against Elgin City at their temporary home of the Falkirk Stadium.
Queen’s have now completed their first 18 matches without losing and are 13 points clear at the top of the table having scored 37 goals and conceded only eight and secured promotion with four games to spare.
