Friends of Granton Castle Walled Garden have received £10,000 from the National Lottery to match fund the money they had already received from the Robertson Trust.

The money that they have received will be used to hire a Community Project Development Officer for one year to develop plans for the garden, including opening a green gym, planting a miniforest and increasing opening hours.

The ‘secret’ walled garden is thought to date back to medieval times but ran into disrepair after Granton Castle was demolished. The Friends of Granton Castle Walled Garden group was set up in recent years to restore the garden and keep its history alive.

A spokesperson for the Friends said: “The Friends of Granton Castle Walled Garden are delighted to announce that we have been awarded a grant from the National Lottery. The award will match fund the money already given to us by the Robertson Trust.

“We are very excited about the possibilities this gives us and are looking forward to strengthening our links with the community over the coming year.”

Scottish Conservative MSP for Lothian, Jeremy Balfour, who lodged a motion in the Scottish Parliament to congratulate Friends of Granton Castle Walled Garden, has said:

“My congratulations go to the Friends of Granton Castle Walled Garden on receiving this funding and for the work that they do to preserve this historical site.

“I look forward to seeing the money being used on further developments that will benefit the community and I hope to visit the gardens for myself in the near future.”
