As we get ready for Edinburgh’s Christmas to open later today in East Princes Street Gardens, the discussion about the use of the gardens, planning permissions and the commercialisation of our public spaces continues.

The Council now invites comments on the way we used our parks between October 2018 and September 2019 for public events. This includes last year’s Christmas events in East Princes Street Gardens and you may tell the council what you thought about that.

This consultation runs until 18 December 2019 and can be found here.

The preamble to the consultation sets the scene : “Edinburgh parks play host to a huge array of events every year and we recognise that there is a balance to be struck between those who wish to host events, those wanting to enjoy them and those whose everyday lives are either enhanced or impacted in some way. In addition, we need to ensure that the quality of the parks and greenspaces across the city are maintained to the highest possible standard.”

This takes into account the Beltane and Samhuinn Fire Festivals on Calton Hill, Summer Sessions and the Virgin Money Festival Fireworks in West Princes Street Gardens.

There will be two further consultations in 2020, one on the plans for a revised Parks Events Manifesto and the other will focus on the Winter Festivals.
