Andy Moloney, from Shannon, Country Clare in Ireland, is getting himself ready to cycle nearly 550miles from Edinburgh to his hometown in aid of autism charities on both sides of the Irish sea.
Setting off on 3 September 2019 the trip will take five days and will allow Andy to raise money for Scottish and Irish autism charities Scottish Autism, the Irish Society for Autism and Ennis Voices for Autism (EVA).
Andy works for Malones bar in Edinburgh, and he was inspired to raise money and awareness for these charities when his son Ellis was diagnosed with autism just before his third birthday.
He will spend two days cycling from Edinburgh to Cairnryan before boarding the ferry to Belfast, then cycling for three days from there to County Clare.
After already reaching his initial target of £2000, so far Andy has raised £5400 for Scottish Autism and €4500 for the Irish charities aiming for even more before he sets out and also during the trip.
A cause close to Andy’s heart, seven of his friends also have children who are on the autism spectrum. Andy said: “Schools are struggling massively with supporting the growing number of children on the autism spectrum, with 1 in 59 children now being diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. Funds are needed to cope with this rise and charities need all the help they can get to support families.
“It’s a matter that needs as much awareness as possible, so I’m just glad to be doing my bit towards helping the amazing autism charities in Scotland and Ireland.”
