Created in 1750 for the 3rd Earl of Marchmont, Marchmont House at Greenlaw in Berwickshire is less than an hour by road from Edinburgh, and has to be one of the finest Grade-A listed Palladian mansions in Scotland.
Although substantial alterations were undertaken between 1914 and 1917 by the Scottish architect Sir Robert Lorimer, the interiors, with their splendid original George II period plasterwork by Thomas Clayton, remain intact.
Last year, Marchmont House was awarded the 2018 Historic Houses/Sotheby’s Award for its recently completed, seven-year restoration project. The stated intention of the current owners is to bring this magnificent building to life as a ‘home for Makers and Creators’, a celebration of innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship.
On Saturday 3 August 2019 the first of a series of ticketed events will commence at 10.00am with Conversations in Wood – Roger Deakin on David Nash in Wildwood. This will be repeated on Monday 5 August 2019 at 6.00pm.
On the evening of Saturday 21 September 2019, the topic under discussion will be Exploring Modern Scottish Sculpture @ Marchmont House.
At the core of these events is an exhibition showcasing the work of contemporary ‘makers’ who use wood within their creative practice from across the Scottish Borders, Scotland and beyond.
The special relationship between craftsmen and wood will be explored through a series of talks and a selection of film screenings. The array of talent on display includes work by Andrew Mackenzie, David Nash, Sebastian Cox, Charlie Poulsen, Pauline Burbidge, Lawrence Neal, Lucilla Sim, Thomas Hawson, Isabelle Moore, Angus Richardson, Anthony Bryant, Roland Fraser, Beth Legg, Naomi Micintosh, Angus Ross, Eleanor Lakelin, Jim Partridge, Liz Walmsley, Edward Teasdale and Adrian McCurdy.
Presented in collaboration with Visual Arts Scotland and The Scottish Gallery, as well as Craft Scotland, these fascinating opportunities to see inside Marchmont House, one of the great houses of Scotland, are rightly being billed as “journeys of discovery.”
