Edinburgh Monarchs have confirmed that Swedish racer Joel Andersson is ruled out of Tuesday’s key SGB Championship clash with Glasgow Tigers at the Peugeot Ashfield Stadium.

He has broken two bones in a foot and has returned to Sweden to visit a bone specialist there but doctors say he could be out for longer than two weeks.

Monarchs have drafted in Sheffield Tigers American reserve Broc Nicol but Victor Palovaara, who hurt his hand and knee on Friday, is determined to ride in Glasgow.

Both sides are chasing league pace-setters Peterborough who have 41 points from 18 matches.

Workington Comets are second with 36 points from 17 outings with Edinburgh third on 35 points from 18 fixtures.

Glasgow are fourth two points behind Edinburgh but have tracked in one less match.

Meanwhile, in the SGB Championship Berwick Bandits pushed Peterborough hard at the East of England Showground before losing 47-43.

Bandits were only four points adrift at 41-37 with two heats left but Simon Lambert beat Bandits’ experienced Dutchman Theo Pijper to win Heat 14 with Michael Palm Toft in third place.

That secured the victory despite Aaron Summers winning the last race with guest Thomas Jorgensen in second place ahead of Bandits racer Jye Etheridge.

Berwick’s two former Peterborough riders David Howe and Nicolaj Busk Jakobsen both failed to deliver.

Peterborough: Thomas Jorgensen (guest) 11, Emil Grondal 5, Bradley Wilson-Dean 9, Michael Palm Toft 5, Ulrich Ostergaard 5, Simon Lambert 7, Jordan Stewart (guest) 5

Berwick: Aaron Summers 11, Kevin Doolan 8, Jye Ethridge 9, David Howe 2, Nicolaj Busk Jakobsen 4, Dany Gappmaier 2, Theo Pijper 7
