Malmaison have struck a deal to develop a new hotel at Buchan House on the north west corner of  St Andrew Square.

The hotel brand which trades under Malmaison Hotel du Vin Group has teamed up with property developer S Harrison to transform the Grade A building into a boutique hotel. This area is blossoming with the influx of hotels and restaurants in the area. It is also very conveniently placed for the tram stop and shops on George Street as well as Harvey Nichols and the new Edinburgh St James development on the east side of the square.

Planning permission was granted last year and work will begin on the transformation before the summer.

We are assured that the new Mal will be stylish and will retain the period features of the historic building.

It is expected that around 50 new jobs will be created in the new establishment which will range over 44,000 square feet and will have 72 bedrooms and suites. The Mal will not replace but it is hoped will complement the existing hotel at Shore Place which opened in 1994.

Guus Bakker, Chief Executive Officer, Malmaison Hotel du Vin, said: “Edinburgh is a much-loved global destination for tourists and business alike and Malmaison is a great fit for the City and its visitors. We are delighted to be complementing our existing Leith hotel with a great venue for visitors to the city centre.  Where better to demonstrate our commitment to Scotland than with the opening of Malmaison in the famous St Andrew Square?”

S Harrison’s Development Director, David Clancy, said: “This is an exciting project and we are very pleased to conclude this deal with Malmaison, who will bring to life such an extremely prominent building.  Its rich history and splendid architectural features will ultimately form the foundations of a fascinating, memorable and truly unique hotel.  Malmaison’s high quality offering and sympathetic styling in other high-profile buildings throughout the UK ensures it will be the perfect fit for Buchan House.”
