The worst-kept secret in Scottish football was confirmed today as Hearts full-back Callum Paterson signed for Cardiff City following the end of his contract in Gorgie.

Paterson has been a mainstay of the Hearts team in recent seasons but, after seven years in Gorgie, the 22-year-old has decided to ply his trade in the English Championship with the Welsh club.

The big man made 162 appearances for the Jambos, and his 38 goals were invaluable as Hearts made an immediate return to the Ladbrokes Premiership after a brief period ‘downstairs’ in the Championship and went on to consolidate their place in the top flight of Scottish football.

Injury meant Paterson missed much of the second half of last season. As he is just 22 years old, Hearts will be entitled to a training fee from Cardiff City.  It’s understood that Paterson has asked for a clause in his contract enabling Hearts to receive a percentage of any future transfer fee should he leave Cardiff in the years ahead.

The Edinburgh Reporter wishes Callum Paterson all the very best in the next step of his career.
