Edinburgh musical fans are in for a huge treat next week when the legendary musical Funny Girl comes to Edinburgh’s Playhouse.

The musical, which first opened on Broadway in 1964, is semi-biographical, based on the life and career of Broadway star, film actress and comedienne Fanny Brice. Funny Girl was arguably Hollywood star Barbra Streisand’s big break through her lead role in the original production.

After leaving the Broadway show during the original run, Streisand reprised her role in the 1966 West End production at London’s Prince of Wales Theatre.

A film adaptation of the musical was released in 1968 starring Streisand alongside Omar Sharif. Streisand won the Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as well as the Golden Globe. It was the top grossing film of the year. Diana Ross & The Supremes recorded a cover album of songs from the show to tie-in with the release of the film.

Now, in 2017, one of this country’s most talented and respected actors, Sheridan Smith, BAFTA award-winning star of stage and screen reprises her smash hit performance in the role of Fanny Brice. She will be joined by former Popstars contestant Darius Campbell who plays Nick Arnstein.

Glasgow-born Darius has appeared in stage shows such as Chicago, Guys and Dolls, Gone with the Wind, and From Here to EternityCarmen (Europe and 02) and The History of the Big Bands (tour).
