The Church of Scotland are holding what they describe as a ‘unique’ hustings session on 4 April 2016.

Leading representatives from the main political parties have been invited to respond to the voters ahead of the Scottish Parliamentary Election on 5 May.

Deputy First Minister John Swinney of the SNP, Scottish Labour Party leader Kezia Dugdale, Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie, Scottish Greens co-convener Patrick Harvie and former Scottish Conservatives leader Annabel Goldie are all taking part.

This event, chaired by Moderator the Right Rev Dr Angus Morrison, is designed to give a voice to voters whose voice is unheard. It will take place at the General Assembly Hall which was home to the Scottish Parliament for the first five years of its life.

Dr Morrison said:  “Politics is not just about politicians, it is about all of us.

“I am excited to be chairing People’s Politics because it will place the experiences of people who have had a raw deal at the very heart of our debate.

“As we move towards the 2016 Scottish elections this evening will inspire and inform our discussion while clearly demonstrating the Church’s desire for a different sort of political debate.”

The format involves ordinary members of the public sharing their stories one at a time followed by questions from the audience and discussion.

The Moderator will ask each of the party representatives, one at a time, to come and share their thoughts on what they have heard.

The event will be live streamed via the Church of Scotland website. www.churchofscotland.org.uk.

As one man risks everything to fall in love, join Northern Ballet in Edinburgh for the Scotland Première of Jonathan Watkins’ critically acclaimed 1984. ‘The ballet equivalent of a page turner’ (The Stage), Northern Ballet is bringing this cult-classic to life for four performances only at the Festival Theatre from 31 March – 2 April 2016. Tickets can be booked by calling the Box Office on 0131 529 6000 or online at edtheatres.com.

In Northern Ballet’s 1984, Ministry of Truth worker Winston Smith lives in a world of absolute conformity, his every action scrutinised by Big Brother. Whilst outwardly conforming to Party doctrine, he is secretly disillusioned, illegally documenting his thoughts in a diary. When one day he receives a love note from Julia, the pair begin an illicit affair, leading a dangerous double life putting physical desire above Party discipline. As their romance develops and they prepare for an act of political rebellion, Winston and Julia discover that Big Brother is always watching and no one can be trusted; least of all themselves.

The Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh will once again host world leaders from the cultural sector at the third Edinburgh International Culture Summit, to be held from 24 to 26 August 2016, during one of the world’s greatest cultural events, the Edinburgh Festivals.

Since the inaugural Summit in 2012, the Edinburgh International Culture Summit has established itself in the global political and cultural calendar as a place where ground-breaking artists, thinkers and arts leaders from around the world can come together with culture ministers to inspire positive change in arts and cultural policy.

Announcing just before she retired that the Summit would be returning to Holyrood, the Presiding Officer of the Scottish Parliament the Rt Hon Tricia Marwick MSP said: “This event spreads the positive message of the role of the arts and culture in our society.  I am proud that the Scottish Parliament is once again championing this event.  I can think of no other place more relevant than Holyrood to bring together parliamentarians, artists and world leading thinkers in this field.”

RZSS Edinburgh Zoo has become home to the famous Kelpies Maquettes as part of the Edinburgh International Science Festival.

Until Sunday 10 April, visitors to the Zoo can see the stunning three metre high sculptures. The horse head statues arrived early on the morning of Wednesday 23 March to be set up ahead of the start of the Edinburgh International Science Festival on 26 March.

The Maquettes are scale models of The Kelpies that were created by renowned Scottish sculptor Andy Scott, as models for the 30 metre (100ft) high sculptures of two horses’ heads which were completed in November 2013.
