Escher and the Alhambra: From Abstraction to Figuration. MC Escher’s visit to the Alhambra in 1922 would forever transform his work; Dr Lara Eggleton (University of Leeds) will explore the impact of the Alhambra on the artist’s practice and how its composition served as the foundation for imaginary worlds on a two-dimensional plane. 12.45-1.30pm, Hawthornden Lecture Theatre, Scottish National Gallery, The Mound. A four-man orchestra from Santa Cruz, California that ‘seamlessly weaves trance based blues music, harkening back to John Lee Hooker and Howlin Wolf, with a drunken minor swing comparable to some of Tom Waits’ darker works.
