Edinburgh’s Meadows will come to life this Sunday with cricket or charity cricket-a-thon
Cricket is having its own Festival this Sunday (24 August), as the Edinburgh Meadows are set to come to life with a lively cricket event. Numerous teams will take part in a Children’s Kwik Cricket Tournament, and visitors of every age and ability are invited to come and try their hand at the sport – all part of Cricket Scotland’s ‘cricket-a-thon’ in aid of the STV Appeal.
The Meadows Kwik Cricket Tournament begins at 9.30am and will run into the early afternoon, with the brilliant Cricket Factory equipment also set up for people of all ages to have a go at batting and bowling during the games.
The event is part of Cricket Scotland’s ‘cricket-a-thon’ in aid of the STV Appeal, which helps children living in poverty in Scotland. Cricket Scotland is encouraging as many people as possible to get involved with cricket over the weekend whilst raising funds for the charity by donating to www.justgiving.com/stumpuptoplay or texting CRIC70 plus an amount (e.g. £2) to 70070.
Some Scotland team players will be there on the day, offering hints and tips to the children and all those who fancy a go, and encouraging people to donate.
Preston Mommsen, Scotland Team player, said: “It’s great that so many children will be out playing cricket at this fantastic Edinburgh venue in what should be an exciting tournament. We’d also love as many people as possible to come and have a try at playing cricket themselves – we’ll be on hand to offer hints and tips, and can promise it’ll be great fun. We’d also ask everyone to donate something to our cricket-a-thon, it’s for a brilliant cause.”
Roddy Smith, Chief Executive of Cricket Scotland said: “Cricket is one of the fastest-growing sports in Scotland and we have events taking place across the country this weekend – we hope that everyone enjoys the experience. The Edinburgh event promises to be great fun and we’d encourage everyone to come along and try their hand at cricket, whilst raising money for a truly worthwhile cause at the same time. We’re asking people to ‘stump up to play’, even if it’s just a pound, every little helps.”
Elizabeth Partyka of STV Appeal said: “A huge thank you to Cricket Scotland for getting behind the STV Appeal with this fantastic fundraising event. The Cricket-a-thon is set to be a fantastic weekend for cricket fans up and down the country, so whether you’re a club member or arrange a game with friends in your local park, please make it count by donating to the STV Appeal and help our fight against child poverty in Scotland. The STV Appeal 2014 is now underway with lots of exciting fundraising activities and we hope to make this our best year yet.”
Kwik Cricket provides children of all levels and ability and experience with the opportunity to participate in a fun introduction to cricket and encourages fair play.
