Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses following a handbag snatch in Edinburgh.

The incident happened around 12pm yesterday (Wednesday) in Valleyfield Street.

An 85-year-old woman left the Scotmid store on Leven Street and was heading home when she passed the Skean Dhu pub.

At this time two men walked past the woman, grabbing her bag in the process before making off from the area.

Police were then contacted and officers are urging anyone who can assist with their enquiries to come forward.

The first suspect is described as white, 20-30-years-old, around 5ft 10ins tall with a slim build and short dark hair. He was wearing a dark jacket and jeans.

There is currently no description of the second suspect.

Detective Constable Paul Greig said: “This was an opportunistic robbery carried out on an elderly woman as she walked home alone.

“As a result, the victim has been left badly shaken and is still in a very distressed state.

“Given the time of day this crime occurred, there were potentially a number of people in the street and surrounding area. We would urge anyone who remembers seeing anything suspicious to contact police immediately.

“Similarly, anyone who can help us identify the men responsible are also asked to get in touch.”

Anyone with any information can contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or the charity Crimestoppers in confidence and complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.
