Happy St Patrick’s Day – Edinburgh Derby – Leith Walk – Edinburgh Festival – Pandas get the Lynx effect

The Reporter has actually already celebrated the Irish saint’s national day at a soiree graciously hosted by the Irish Consul General, Susan Conlon, on Thursday evening when Guinness (of course!) was served. But Happy St Patrick’s Day to all you Irish diaspora settled here in Edinburgh. The Camera Obscura and The Hub will be green tonight in recognition.

This weekend the English rugby team take on Ireland at Twickenham, and Scotland take on Italy in Rome. The Scots will have to work hard to avoid bringing home the wooden spoon, although it was heartening that a couple of Scottish players were nominated as players of the Season this week.

The big sporting match in Edinburgh this weekend is the Edinburgh derby tomorrow at Tynecastle when Hearts play at home to Hibs. The Daily Record has a preview of what the match might hold in store. If you don’t have a ticket the likelihood is that you might have to know somebody who knows somebody to get one now.

Leith Walk has been given a damning report according to The Edinburgh Evening News. It is among the most dangerous streets in Britain for cyclists. We are interested to see that Transport convenor Gordon Mackenzie says there is £3m set aside for upgrading to the street later this year. Much of the damage to the surface of Leith Walk can be put down to the tram works which are causing further diversions to bus services from next weekend. Lothian Buses have full details on their website which will see buses diverting away from West Maitland Street and Haymarket Terrace.

You have a week to decide what you might like to go and see at the Edinburgh International Festival. We have our own guide here and there is a minute by minute account of the programme launch here. Given that Festival Director announced to the whole room that he is to retire after the 2014 Festival it is difficult to see how this story here is an exclusive……

Lynx has been announced as the official partner for the panda mating season at Edinburgh Zoo, to help encourage their most famous residents make panda cubs. With mating season just about to kick off, the whole world will be watching giant pandas Tian Tian and Yang Guang in the hope that they will move beyond flirty glances.

Lynx recently caused a stir amongst the human species with the release of their “For Him” and “For Her” Attract range. The coming together of the two new editions encouraged people up and down the country to “Unleash the Chaos” wherever they are.

Now Edinburgh Zoo is being offered some sexy pearls of wisdom from the makers of Lynx Attract ‘For Him’ & ‘For Her’, which could help Unleash the Chaos for Tian Tian and Yang Guang, resulting in some hanky-panky panda action and, hopefully, giant panda cubs.  And, although Tian Tian or Yang Gaung won’t be wearing Lynx themselves, you can’t underestimate the importance of scent in the panda mating process!

Remember you can watch at least some of what the pandas are up to  on the Zoo’s panda cam.
