A 32-year-old man has been arrested and charged in connection with an alleged hit and run, which happened in Edinburgh last year.

He appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Tuesday this week.

A cyclist was knocked off his bicycle during the incident, which happened in Johnston Terrace on Monday 7 November 2011.

Lothian and Borders Police have carried out a check of licensed premises in Penicuik and Roslin areas of Midlothian as part of an initiative to detect drug abuse and deter criminal behaviour in the area’s pubs and clubs.

A total of 10 venues were visited on Friday 30th December 2011 as part of Operation Eucalyptus, with officers inspecting toilet cubicles for evidence of drug use.

The toilets in seven of these premises tested positive for cocaine and the licensees were given appropriate advice on how to prevent further offending. Both male and female toilets were tested.

During the operation, officers were also able to monitor the clientele of the pubs tested and gather intelligence on anyone believed to be involved in criminal behaviour.

Inspector Neil Simpson said: “Police in Midlothian will regularly carry out checks of the local pubs and licensed premises to ensure the terms of the licence are being adhered to, and to deter any criminal activity from taking place within.

“All of the pubs we visited were very supportive and took the advice we offered them onboard gladly.”

“Lothian and Borders Police is committed to ensuring the public in Midlothian can enjoy a safe and secure night out in the county’s various licensed premises and anyone found to be responsible for any criminal activity within will be robustly dealt with.”

Police in Edinburgh have arrested and charged three people, following a series of raids where officers recovered £50,000 worth of stolen goods.

A number of addresses in the Craigmillar area of the Capital were visited and searched yesterday, leading to the recovery of an Audi A6, several items of high-value jewellery, and a laptop computer.

All of the items were stolen in break-ins that occurred in the south and east of the city.

A 45-year-old woman and 43-year-old man were arrested and charged in connection with the recovery of the stolen items. They will both appear at court at a later date.

In addition, a 20-year-old man was arrested and charged in connection with two alleged break-ins that happened in the south and east of the city, and he will appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today.

A Lothian and Borders Police spokesman said: “The Force is committed to bringing those involved in acquisitive crime to justice, and reuniting stolen goods with their rightful owners.

A 40-year-old man has been arrested and charged under the Misuse of Drugs Act after Lothian and Borders Police recovered a quantity of cannabis from an address in the North of Edinburgh.

Officials from HMRC carried out a search of a property in Ferry Road Avenue on Wednesday before contacting police to attend.

Approximately £6,000 worth of cannabis and a stun gun were found within the property and seized.

The man is scheduled to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today (Thursday).

A police spokesman said: “Lothian and Borders Police are committed to removing drugs from our communities and work with a number of partners to achieve this. We are grateful for the information passed to us by our colleagues from HMRC.

“Any information we receive relating to criminal activity is treated in the strictest confidence and will be investigated thoroughly.”

Police in Edinburgh are appealing for information following the theft of flares from a business premises in the Capital.

A total of 36 flares were stolen from the yard of Survitec Service and Distribution in Albert Road in Leith, along with three liferafts, two of which have since been recovered.

It is believed that the thefts occurred sometime between December 23 – January 4.

A police spokesman said: “It goes without saying that the flares can be dangerous in the wrong hands, and we are keen for any information that can help us trace the stolen items.

“Anyone who noticed any suspicious activity in the vicinity of the yard in Albert Road over the Christmas and New Year period should contact police – likewise anyone who has been offered any of the stolen flares for sale, or who has any other information that can assist our inquiries, should also get in touch.”
