Lothian and Borders Police are appealing for witnesses after a man attempted to rob a woman in a common stair in Salmond Place, Edinburgh on Monday afternoon (August 1).

The 39-year-old woman encountered the man in the stairwell about 4.55pm when he demanded money before grabbing her. Before he could do anything else, another person appeared in the stairway.  The man then ran off down Salmond Place toward Rossie Place.

The man is described as being white, in his early 30s, slight build with greasy dark blonde hair. He had an acne scarred face, spoke with a local accent and was wearing a dark hooded top at the time.

A police spokesperson said: “Fortunately the woman was not seriously injured, but this experience has left her understandably shaken.

“We are appealing for anyone who may have been in the area at the time, and who saw what happened, to contact police. We would also be keen to hear from anyone who might recognise the description of the suspect.”

Anyone with information should contact Lothian and Borders Police on 0131 311 3131, or the charity Crimestoppers in complete anonymity on 0800 555 111.
