The National Museum of Flight at East Fortune near Edinburgh is marking this year’s Armed Forces Weekend by treating members of the armed services to free entry to the popular East Lothian attraction on Sunday 26 June.
Edinburgh will be hosting the UK national event for Armed Services Day, which takes place this year on Saturday 25 June. Staff at the National Museum of Flight felt the offer of free entry the following day would be an ideal way to show support for the nation’s serviceman and women and their families.
Sited on a former Royal Naval Air Station and RAF training base, the National Museum of Flight has close historical links to the armed services. Its collections range from an exhibition highlighting the role of airships during the First World War, a Tiger Moth biplane and a Second World War Supermarine Spitfire to recent military aircraft including an Avro Vulcan bomber, a Jaguar strike attack aircraft and a Hawker Siddeley MR2 Nimrod. There is also an extensive collection of civilian aircraft including Scotland’s Concorde, as well as Fantastic Flight, an exhibition packed with state-of-the-art, flight-themed interactive exhibits for families to enjoy.
Grant MacKenzie, General Manager, National Museum of Flight said:-“We know how much our museum is enjoyed by serving and past members of the armed services when they visit. Our visitor services staff often tell us that the exhibits have prompted tales of our visitors’ own personal experiences, so we thought that offering free entry to current servicemen and women and their families would be an ideal way to show them our appreciation of their vital contribution.”
Serving members of the armed services will receive free entry to the National Museum of Flight on Sunday 26 June for themselves and their family (2 adults, 2 children under 16). Valid Armed Forces ID will be required.
The National Museum of Flight is currently open seven days a week from 10am until 5pm. For more information visit www.nms.ac.uk
