Edinburgh resident, Rob Willens, plans to tackle the journey from Lands End to John O’Groats on his bicycle to raise funds for a charity close to his heart.

Cancer has affected several members of his family as well as close friends, so Rob will be turning his pedals this month to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Rob says, “I wanted to do something to give back to such a fantastic charity.

“The support that Macmillan gives is often the most important part of cancer treatment. Cancer is affecting more and more people in our communities and with the numbers growing there are more people needing help from Macmillan.

“So hopefully the money I raise will go some way towards helping people locally living with cancer.”

Rob and his friend Oli Edmonds plan on cycling down the east coast of the country; a total distance of just over 960 miles.  Completing nearly 100 miles each day for 10 days straight this is much further than either rider has attempted before.

Taking on a personal challenge for Macmillan is a great way to combine a hobby with fundraising and to raise much needed funds for local cancer services.  Whether you’re taking part in your very first 5k, trekking in foreign lands or being more creative with your plans, Macmillan would like to be with you every step of the way!

Macmillan fundraising manager for Edinburgh, Pamela Williamson added: “The help we provide people with cancer is absolutely essential and we want to be able to give support to everyone who needs it.

“We are delighted that Rob has chosen to raise money for Macmillan and to become part of a very special team of people who go above and beyond in their own personal challenge to support charity.

“Rob will help us to change the lives of the two million people living with or beyond cancer in the UK.”

It is estimated that in the next twenty years the number of people living with cancer will double to 4 million, and many of those will live longer with cancer than ever before.  The job of being there for everyone at every stage of their cancer journey will be harder than ever.
