This was the scene on Sunday at Portobello Beach where the St Ayles skiff just completed by the rowing club was formally launched into the sea.
First of all the new boat Jenny Skylark was wheeled out along the prom where there were speeches, then moved further along the prom accompanied by a piper.
Then the boat was wheeled further along the prom to the beach where there was a ritual “smoking of the boat”
…… and eventually the skiff was formally named at the water’s edge
