Edinburgh residents have mounted a community campaign against the proposed sale of part of Inverleith Park, opposite the Botanic Gardens. They say that the park is under threat of development as the council feels the pinch of budget cuts and looks for ways to generate income. Protesters are exploring the possibility that the land may in fact belong to public under what they call ‘Common Good land rights’. Arcade Fire are set to play Edinburgh Castle on September 1st with two further big name bands planned for the following nights, although organizers Castle Concerts are keeping this information tightly under wraps. Historic Scotland, in charge of visitor operations for the Castle, say they hope the concerts, combined with the refurbishment of the stands taking place this year, will attract a new audience.

Construction company Morgan Sindall has won an £11m contract to build new student accommodation at Heriot-Watt University.

Edinburgh College of Art Principal, Ian Howard, has announced his retirement. The news comes as the merger of the ECA and Edinburgh University looks set to go ahead on 1st August, after being approved by the Secretary for Education Michael Russell MSP. Howard has been an advocate of the move and says that he wants his retirement to signal a new direction for the organization.
