Iain Maclèod: Neach-labhairt fileanta sa Ghàidhlig bho Eilean Leòdhas. Tha e air a bhith a’ fuireach ann an Dùn Èideann o cheann 1970. Nuair a leig e dheth a dhreuchd bhon phoileas ann an 2000, thoisich e ag obair air cànan Ghàidhlig, leasachaidh oideachail agus cultarach nàiseanta agus ionadail le chèile, a treòrachadh le bhith na Neach-Cathrach airson Comann nam Pàrant (Nàiseanta), air Bòrd Comann na Gàidhlig agus, o chionn ghoirid, Àrd – Shuidhear An Comann Gàidhealach. Àrd-Ollamh Coinneach MacFhionghain: Tha Coinneach MacFhionghain air dusan prìomh sgrùdadh rannsachaidh a ghabhail os làimh bho thràth anns na 1970n air coimhearsnachd Ghàidhlig na h-Alba, gu h-ionadail agus gu nàiseanta (cho math ri sgrùdadh air luchd na Gàidhlig ann an Alba Nuadh). Tha e air iomadh sgrùdadh rannsachaidh a stiùireadh air coimhearsnachdan mion-chànain eile, agus tha e air mòran mion-sgrùdaidh deamografaigeach a dhèanamh air luchd na Gàidhlig anns na cunntasan-sluaigh mu dheireadh.

Tha e air a bhith na bhall de Bhuidheann Chomhairleachaidh Mhinistreil na Gàidhlig(MAGOG) eadar 2000-2002 agus na bhall aig Bòrd na Gàidhlig eadar 2004-2006, agus a rithist bho 2008. Bho 2008 tha Coinneach air a bhith na bhall air bòrd Sheirbheis nam Meadhanan Gàidhlig Cuideachd, tha e air Comunn na Gàidhlig a chomhairleachadh cheana, agus o chionn ghoirid Pròiseact Plana Cànain nan Eilean an Iar bho 2002.

Cairistìona Allon. Nar neach-labhairt fileanta sa Ghàidhlig, tha Cairistìona Allon làn-thaiceil ar sgilean is eòlas a’ cleachdadh airson cuideachadh a thoirt gu Bòrd na Gàidhlig àireamhean luchd-cleachdaidh na Gàidhlig àrdachadh.
Leig I seachad a dreuchd mar Stiùiriche Dhreuchdan Alba ann an 2007 agus tha i a nis ag obair mar Stiùriche Neo -Gnìomhach le Riaghaltas na-Alba.
Airson 30 bliadhna tha Cairistìona air a bhith ag obair air poileasaidhean an Riaghaltas a dhèanamh beò, ag obair comhla ri daoine aig a bheil ùidh ann an gnothaichean an Riaghaltas, gu h-ionadail agus gu nàiseanta. Tha i cuideachd air eòlas fhaighinn air obair an earann phoblach.

Fiona Hyslop, Minister for Culture and External Affairs, today announced the appointment of three new members, an extension of appointment for one member and the re-appointment to a second term for three members to Bòrd na Gàidhlig.
The new members are:
Elizabeth (Betty) McAtear is a native Gaelic speaker and was brought up on the Isle of Barra. She retired from the Board of Lews Castle College in April 2010 after serving eight years on the Board, the last two as acting Chairman. She also represented the College as a governor on the Board of the University of the Highlands and Islands Millennium Institute. Previously, she served on the NHS Western Isles Board for 10 years, part of that time as Chair. She brings valuable knowledge of strategic planning and experience of development of governance to the Bòrd.
Iain Campbell is a fluent Gaelic speaker from South Uist. He is the Senior Project Manager of Soillse, a seven year £5.29 million research project focussing on public policy toward the maintenance and revitalisation of Gaelic language and culture and involving the University of the Highlands and Islands Millennium Institute and the Universities of Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow. He is an experienced senior manager and researcher with Masters Degrees in Regional Economics, Business Administration and Rural Development and a BSc with Distinction in Rural Resources. He has a deep knowledge of Gaelic language revitalisation and processes.
John Macleod is a native Gaelic speaker from the Isle of Lewis who has been resident in Edinburgh since 1970. After retiring from a police career in December 2000, he became more actively involved in Gaelic language, educational and cultural developments locally and nationally, becoming Convener of Comann nam Pàrant (Nàiseanta), a Board member of Comunn na Gàidhlig, and, in recent years, President of An Comunn Gàidhealach. He has developed effective translation/interpretation skills and has been an active community contributor to numerous Gaelic developments in Edinburgh. He brings leadership, strategic and effective decision-making skills to the Bòrd along with a sound knowledge of community needs.
These appointments will be for three years and will run from March 1, 2011 to February 28, 2014.
Mrs McAtear, Mr Campbell and Mr Macleod do not hold any other public appointments.
The extension of appointment is for Professor Rob Dunbar
Professor Rob Dunbar is a Senior Research Professor at UHI Millennium Institute based at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig where he is also Director of the ‘Soillse’ research project. He is one of the world’s foremost experts on law and policy relating to minority languages. He has advised international organisations, governments and NGOs on a range of language policy issues, and he is an expert of the Council of Europe on such matters. A native of Canada, he is a fluent Gaelic speaker.
This extended appointment will run from 13 February 2011 to 12 February 2012.
Professor Dunbar is a Board Member with Seirbhis nam Meadhanan Gaidhlig (MG ALBA). Professor Dunbar receives remuneration at the rate of £4980 per annum in relation to this appointment.
The re-appointed members are:
Professor Kenneth MacKinnon Since the early 1970s Professor Kenneth MacKinnon has undertaken twelve major research studies into Gaelic communities, locally and nationally (and in Nova Scotia.) He has supervised numerous research studies into other minority speech-communities, and has undertaken demographic analysis of Gaelic speakers over recent censuses.
His original academic background is in economics, sociology and education, with a career in secondary, further and higher education. He currently holds professorial appointments at the Universities of Aberdeen and Hertfordshire, and is a long-standing associate lecturer of the Open University in Social Sciences, Education and Language Studies.
Between 1976-2006 he organised weekend residential courses for Gaelic learners, and was a member of development groups which established Sabhal Mòr Ostaig and its research unit Lèirsinn.
He has been involved in Gaelic language development and planning as a member of the Ministerial Advisory Group on Gaelic (MAGOG) between 2000 – 2002, and as a board member of Bòrd na Gàidhlig between 2004 – 2006, and again from 2008. Since 2008 he has been a board member of MG Alba. He has provided consultancy to Comunn na Gàidhlig, and to the Western Isles Language Plan Project from 2002.
Professor McKinnon brings a unique knowledge of Gaelic language development and planning to the Bòrd. This will be of particular benefit to the Bòrd in analysing the results that come from Census 2011.
Christina Allon As a native speaker, Christina Allon is committed to applying her experience and skills to assist Bòrd na Gàidhlig in its mission of increasing the number of people who speak and use the Gaelic language.
She retired from her role as Director of Careers Scotland in the Scottish Enterprise area in 2007 and is currently a Non Executive Director with the Scottish Government.
She has 30 years experience of translating Government policy into operation practice; of engaging with a wide variety of national and local stakeholders; and of governance, risk and performance management issues within the public sector.
She brings extensive experience of leading major and complex change management projects, including the merger of 60+ organisations into a new single national entity, and the implementation of ICT infrastructure solutions.
Murdo Maclennan has experience on public bodies at both senior management and executive directorships which has enabled him to exercise skills in relation to the areas of governance, financial management and audit. He has been the Chair of Bòrd na Gàidhlig’s Audit Committee for 3 years. He has assisted staff in advancing the Bòrd’s policies and programmes with community organisations including the crofting community.
These appointments will be for three years and will run from 7 January 2011 to 6 January 2014.
Professor MacKinnon is a board member of Seirbheis nam Meadhnan Gaidhlig (MG ALBA) and is a committee member of the Steering Committee for Scotland’s Census. Mr Maclennan receives remuneration at the rate of £7440 per annum in relation to this appointment. Ms Allon and Mr MacLennan do not hold any other public appointments.
All of the above appointments are part-time and attract a remuneration of £6,200 for a time commitment of three days per month.
The Gaelic Language (Scotland) Act 2005 established Bòrd na Gàidhlig as the national body responsible for promoting the Gaelic language, culture and education in Scotland. Its statutory duties include the delivery of a national language plan for Gaelic and working with public bodies on the development of local Gaelic language plans. The Board provides leadership, direction and guidance for the public body and promotes its core values, policies and objectives. Bòrd na Gàidhlig is based in offices in Inverness.
These Ministerial public appointments were made in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments in Scotland’s Code of Practice.
All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity within the last five years (if there is any to be declared) to be made public. None of the above appointees have declared any political activity within the last five years.
