Occupy Edinburgh emerged from Edinburgh Sheriff Court shortly before 12 noon today claiming a victory, although they have agreed to move out of the camp they set up in the square in October 2011.
Essential Edinburgh raised an action of eviction against the campers, but no court decree was handed down. Instead Occupy Edinburgh agreed to clear the square by 5p.m. today, failing which Essential Edinburgh will return to the Sheriff Court for the eviction notice to be made formal.
One of the representatives who had been in court claimed that the Sheriff who heard their case was sympathetic to their cause.
The message is clear – the businesses such as RBS that got us into this economic crisis which is being used to punish the poorest and most vulnerable in our society don’t want criticism to be seen or heard. Even Essential Edinburgh, the organisation that has been used to push the eviction attempt forward stated in court that they are not against the movement, ‘just against the occupation’. They can be assured that this movement is not finished and a voice will be provided for the 99% who can see the injustice in the poor and poorer having to prop up the wealthy.
Just to clarify. The next day an order for eviction was granted.
