North Berwick lifeboat volunteers have issued a tide warning after three people were cut off at the coast in the past fortnight.

The RNLI crew launched its D-class inshore lifeboat, SUNIJO, to three incidents around East Lothian in the past fortnight.

Two adults were rescued after being cut off while fishing from rocks at Leckenbane, Milsey Bay, while two children were also stranded by the tide at the Leithies.

The lifeboat was launched again after three people were reported to be stranded on two separate rocks at Seacliff Beach, around three nautical miles east of North Berwick.

North Berwick RNLI volunteers on a lifeboat
North Berwick RNLI volunteers have responded to three incidents involving people cut off by the tide in the past fortnight.

Coastguard rescue teams from North Berwick and Dunbar made contact with one of those involved, who waited for the tide to fall, while the other two were brought ashore by the lifeboat.

The RNLI is now reminding people to check tide times before visiting the coast and make sure they have enough time to return before their route is blocked.

A 2025 Bangor University survey found four in ten people had no basic understanding of tides, while only 24% could correctly read and interpret a tide timetable well enough to avoid being cut off.

RNLI data shows lifeboat crews and lifeguards responded to 7,971 incidents involving people cut off by the tide across the UK and Ireland over the past decade.

Many of those incidents were considered life-threatening, with 452 lives saved.

The charity recommends using trusted sources such as the Met Office for tide times and coastal weather information.

Visitors are also reminded that tides come in and out twice every 24 hours, with times and heights varying between locations and from day to day.

The advice applies to coastal walkers as well as beachgoers and anyone who becomes cut off should call 999 and ask for the Coastguard rather than attempting to wade or swim to safety.
