Pets from across Edinburgh are being invited to Greyfriars Kirk for its annual blessing service on World Animal Day.
The Pet Blessing Service will return to the historic Old Town kirk at 3pm on Sunday, 4 October, followed by an animal parade through Greyfriars Kirkyard – and organisers say everything from dogs and cats to horses and snakes will be welcome.
The event, held in partnership with Edinburgh Interfaith Association for the fourth year, will bring together representatives from a range of faiths and none to celebrate the relationship between people and their animals.
Organisers are encouraging Edinburgh residents to bring their pets along, whatever their shape or size.
Previous attendees have included some considerably larger visitors – with a full-grown horse making an appearance at the 2023 service.
Following this year’s ceremony, animals and their owners will parade through the kirkyard before a wreath is laid at the grave of Greyfriars Bobby.
The afternoon will conclude with tea and coffee inside the kirk.
The service will also raise money and collect food donations for Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home, which has been supporting animals and their owners in the region for more than 140 years.
There is a historic link between the charity and one of Edinburgh’s most famous dogs.
Organisers say former Lord Provost William Chambers, who helped found the Home, also issued Greyfriars Bobby with a dog licence after the death of his owner John Gray, helping protect the Skye terrier.
Iain Stewart, executive director of Edinburgh Interfaith Association, said the event was becoming a highlight of the city’s calendar.
He said: “This service celebrates the deep emotional connection we have with our pets.
“Thank you to Greyfriars Kirk and the Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home for supporting this gathering, which continues to grow every year.”
Gillian Couper, a probationer for ministry who will lead the service on behalf of Greyfriars Kirk, said: “We are delighted to host this event each year which brings together all creatures, great and small, to give gratitude for their pets and the wonders of the animal world.
“Given the Kirk’s historic link to Greyfriars Bobby, it offers a unique location for this annual occasion.”
The event coincides with World Animal Day and the feast day of St Francis of Assisi, traditionally regarded as the patron saint of animals and the environment.
Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, Humanist, Sikh, Muslim and Baha’i representatives are among those expected to take part.
Edinburgh Dog and Cat Home will also have a stall at the event, with visitors invited to donate dry pet food as well as money.
The Pet Blessing Service begins at 3pm on Sunday, 4 October, at Greyfriars Kirk, Greyfriars Place.
