An Edinburgh girls’ school has announced its current head will step down next year to be replaced by the leader of a southern English boarding school.
Niamh Green will take the reins at St George’s School on the Ravelston campus, succeeding Carol Chandler-Thompson.
Ms Green will relocate to the Scottish capital from Roedean school, bringing over two decades of experience in the education sector.
Ms Chandler-Thompson, who has been in post since August 2022, is leaving to become director of education at a global schools group.
During Ms Chandler-Thompson’s time in charge, St George’s completed its “One School” project, bringing all pupils and facilities together in Ravelston.
The school also reported first-choice university outcomes of over 95% and 100% participation levels in sports.
Academic results in 2026 reached their strongest levels since the pandemic.
Ms Green arrives following a tenure at Roedean that began in 2023, alongside previous senior roles at Mayfield School, Godolphin School, and Woldingham School.
Tracey Ashworth-Davies, chair of council, confirmed the appointment and thanked Ms Chandler-Thompson for her work in preparing young women for a fast-changing world.
Ms Ashworth-Davies confirmed Ms Chandler-Thompson will continue to support the school as a member of council.
Ms Green is a serving Independent Schools Inspectorate inspector and holds an MBA in educational leadership from UCL.
Ms Green said: “Stepping into the role of Head at St George’s is a real honour. From my first visit, I was impressed by the whole community – exceptional pupils, staff dedicated to the girls, and governors of real calibre.
“The girls I met were articulate, energetic, and compassionate young women, with clear ambition and pride in their school. I am very much looking forward to championing this remarkable school and breadth of opportunities it offers all pupils from age two to 18.”
