A NEW CCTV camera has been installed in Morningside after a “concerning rise” in retail crime and shoplifting was noted by retailers and the local MSP.

The camera was added at the urging of a consortium of local politicians, traders, and police after a new wave of retail crime reared its head.

Local MSP, Daniel Johnson, chaired a meeting with these local representatives to “discuss the concerning rise of shoplifting and retail crime in the area”.

After a number of points were agreed upon, the new camera was pursued and eventually installed by the council next to the Merlin pub at the mid-point of Morningside Road.

In a statement posted online, Mr Johnson said: “Last month, I chaired a meeting with traders on Morningside Road, local councillors and police representatives to discuss the concerning rise of shoplifting and retail crime in the area.

“A number of action points were agreed and I am thankful to those who secured this new CCTV camera outside the Merlin which captures good views of Morningside Road in both directions.

“As a former retailer, this is an area I have done a lot of work on over the years – from organising police training for local retailers, to passing my own private members bill making it a specific offence to abuse, assault or threaten a retail worker.

“I will continue to work hard to keep our shopworkers and streets in South Edinburgh safe.”

The council confirmed that the CCTV camera is linked to the City Operations Centre at the City Chambers and is staffed 24/7 by CCTV Operators who have direct contact with Police Scotland.
