Glasgow Tigers powered into the top three in the Cab Direct Championship with a 51-39 victory at Workington Comets, their second away win four days.
It was an all-round display by the Allied Vehicles-backed team but Cammi Brown, the club’s team manager, singled out young German racer, Mario Hausl, as the hero with paid nine points at reserve.
Brown said: “Mario really was super and he has delivered two fantastic performances this week. He got paid eight at Oxford and then paid nine here at Workington. He was outstanding in both meetings.
“People forget he’s only 19, but he’s starting to find his feet and is now doing a great job for us, but it was another proper team performance. Our boys won the first seven races and really suffocated Workington. We didn’t give them a sniff.”
Brown also mentioned Sam Hagon who his two opening races and he added: “Our top three all did their jobs and special mention for Leon (Flint) as he top scored with 11, dropping just one point.
“Leon has been a tower of strength recently. He looks so polished and has developed into a top class scorer.
“Chris (Harris) played the perfect team role while Kyle Howarth reeled off three wins. Freddy (Hodder) had a tougher day with bike issues, but still battled until the end.”
Brown said: “It’s great to go top of the league. Obviously the teams around us have had less meetings, so it will balance out in time, but a week ago I said I felt we were a whisker away from getting the results we needed.
“We’ve got ourselves into a strong position, now we’ve got to keep this run going.”
Elsewhere, battling Berwick Bandits came within a £3 chain link of claiming an improbable bonus point after a frantic night’s racing in the Borders.
The broken chain link sent home skipper Jye Etheridge crashing into the fence instead of taking a comfortable chequered flag, turning an easy home 5-1 into a shared heat in the process.
That four point swing ultimately meant that the Bandits had to settle for two Championship points, the aggregate bonus sending the Scorpions a point clear at the head of the Cab Direct Championship table.
It was pretty much a case of former Edinburgh Monarchs skipper, Josh Pickering, against the Bandits, the Australian scorching to 16 points and setting the fastest time around Shielfield Park this season in the process.
Reserve Nathan Ablitt weighed in with ten points and Connor Mountain six, but the other three visitors managed just two further points.
Peter Kildemand top scored for Berwick with 13 points, including a heat 15 victory over Pickering, while Victor Palovaara enjoyed his best night in Berwick colours, his 12 points including a victory over the in-form Scunthorpe No 1.
There was another sensational contribution from Jordan Jenkins who, after struggling to score 26 points in eight meetings for Redcar this season, has managed 24 (paid 26) in two outings for Bandits as a short-term replacement for Australian Reid Battye.
Incidentally, he put in some impressive post-meeting practice laps as he eyes a return to racing after suffering a fractured vertebrae in May.
In the match, Berwick took full advantage of Scunthorpe’s weak middle order, posting three 5-1s against Michael Palm Toft and this win was an ideal warm for the MAXICab Knockout Cup semi-final against Poole Pirates.
Berwick : Petr Kildemand 13, Jye Etheridge 3+2, Victor Palovaara 12, Lasse Fredriksen 4+3, Nick Morris 8+1, Jack Smith 5+2, Jordan Jenkins 11+2
Scunthorpe: Josh Pickering 16, Connor Mountain, 6+1, Alfie Bowtell 0, Dan Gilkes R/R, Michael Palm Toft 2, Ryan Ingram 0, Nathan Ablitt 10+1
