Jason Kerr admits he is ‘buzzing’ after signing a two-year deal with boyhood favourites Hibs.
The 29-year-old became David Gray’s first signing of the Summer Transfer Window, subject to clearance for the SFA – penning a two-year deal that will keep him at the Club until Summer 2028.
Kerr is no stranger to the Club having grown up a Hibs supporter and been previously linked with a move to Easter Road.
The experienced defender has had a decorated career so far, captaining St Johnstone to a historic cup double in 2021, before spending his last five years at Wigan Athletic.
Now, Kerr can’t wait to come home and pull on the Hibs shirt for the first time as a player.
“I am obviously delighted to be here. Hibs is such a big club, and I think it’s a well-known secret that I’m a Hibs fan.
“I’m really proud to be here and a lot of my family and friends will be proud as well.
“I have come from a Hibs background, so I’m just delighted.
“I think I was about five or six when I came to Easter Road for my first game.
“I’ve been coming to Easter Road for a long time now, so to actually be here as a player is a significant moment for me – I’m buzzing.
After becoming a free agent this summer, following five years at Wigan, Kerr explained how the move came about and why now was the perfect time to join the Club.
“It came around really naturally,” he continued.
“Obviously I was out of contract with Wigan and the Manager had seen me play a few times last season. I know Liam Craig as well, having played with him at St Johnstone. I spoke to Liam earlier; he was just checking in with me and seeing what I was doing next season. He knew I was out of contract, so we had a conversation and then I spoke to the Club. Things moved pretty quickly from there, I spoke to the manager and everything went well. I’m just really happy it’s all got done.
“I just felt it was the right move at this stage of my career. I’ve still got a lot to give, so I think it was the right move at the right time.
“I think Hibs are only going one way right now, and that’s up. The last two seasons have brought really good finishes and we want to keep building on that. Hopefully, next season can be even better.
“Hibs are such a good club. I know I’m saying that because I’m a Hibs fan, but it’s a massive club. We want to reach the heights that we’re capable of.”
Kerr brings with him a wealth of Scottish experience and leadership qualities having captained both St Johnstone and most recently Wigan Athletic. He explained what Hibs fans can expect from him on the pitch, and how excited he is to hit the ground running.
“We had a great season at St Johnstone and I was captain. We managed to win two trophies, which was extraordinary at the time.
“Then I went to Wigan and soon became captain there as well. I feel those experiences have helped me a lot in my career and they’ve matured me as both a person and as a player.
“Being captain comes with a lot of responsibility, but I think coming to Hibs right now is the best thing for me. I can’t wait to get started and show the Hibs fans what I can do.
“I’ll bring a lot of experience, of course, but I’ll always give 100% for the badge. If I don’t, my mates will batter me for it!
“I’ll always give everything I have and try to play as well as I can. Hopefully I can bring plenty of good things to the team.”
