Edinburgh Central MSP urges “proper enforcement” of motorbike gangs after collision

Lorna Slater has urged for “proper enforcement” of motorbikes being driven dangerously in the city after a pedestrian was hospitalised following a collision with three electric motorbikes on Tuesday.

The incident took place just after 2pm in St Patrick Square, with a woman being taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

Both riders left the scene prior to the arrival of officers. 

Officers have since announced that “three Suron-style electric motorbikes”, which resemble dirt bikes, were involved in the incident.

Motorbike gangs on similar equipment have been seen speeding and performing dangerous manoeuvres by members of the public for a number of years.

Edinburgh Central MSP Lorna Slater has since urged for “proper enforcement” of the vehicles in the city centre following the incident.

Ms Slater said: “St Patrick Square is a busy part of the city, with students, residents, workers, pedestrians and bus passengers all moving through the area every day. 

“People need to be able to walk through our city centre safely and without fear of being hit by vehicles being ridden dangerously. Where people are using electric motorbikes, dirt bikes or similar vehicles dangerously or illegally in public spaces, there must be proper enforcement.

“Edinburgh needs safe, accessible and sustainable transport, but that depends on public confidence. Reckless and antisocial use of powerful electric vehicles undermines that and puts pedestrians at risk.”

Ms Slater added: “This sounds like a really frightening incident, and my thoughts are with the woman who was taken to hospital. I hope she makes a full and swift recovery.

“I would urge anyone with information about this incident to contact Police Scotland as soon as possible.”
