More than 20 primary school children set off on the newly established Mauricewood Bike Bus today.
The cycling initiative was set up by local parents who aim to support young people to cycle to school independently and responsibly, which will have a direct impact on traffic congestion and parking restrictions.
The Bike Bus is a group of people cycling together along a planned route. It helps to build children’s confidence, independence and helps develop their road safety skills. There are also added health benefits with cycling to school.
The scheme has received funding from the Scottish Police Credit Union and use a e-cargo bike donated by Cycling UK.
School liaison officer, Constable Louise Cassidy, said ‘I think this is a fantastic initiative that will help encourage exercise and wellbeing prior to the school day commencing as well as reducing traffic and promoting safe travel to school.”
