Edinburgh with its lively pub scene is the ideal place to celebrate St Patrick’s Day.

Edinburgh has a full complement of Irish pubs and nightclubs in which to cut loose and raise a toast to Ireland’s patron saint and some of those are in Cowgate in Edinburgh where early on Tuesday revellers were already out and about.

The surrounding Cowgate area has a special connection to Ireland, being the birthplace of James Connolly, the noted Irish Republican, socialist, and trade union organiser who was executed by the British Government for his role in the 1916 Easter Rising.

And although James Connolly may not be at the forefront of the minds of many Edinburgh Paddy’s Day revellers, the (fairly tenuous) link lives on, and Cowgate has now become a hotspot for Ireland-themed activity.
