New cycle path opened in North Edinburgh
A new cycle path opened near the Gasholder in North Edinburgh this week.
This is part of the £1.3 billion regeneration project on Granton Waterfront and links Pennywell Roundabout to the Prom at Gypsy Brae. It is a segregated cycle route with new and improved footpaths and crossings for pedestrians and cyclists.
Members of the North Edinburgh Arts cycle group met with Cllr Stephen Jenkinson Transport and Environment Convener to declare the pathway open.
Although some trees have been planted as part of the scheme there will be more introduced in the spring.
The new route complements the improvements at Pennywell Road roundabout and will be added to with more improvements planned on West Shore Road east of Gypsy Brae.
Cllr Jenkinson said: “It’s important that our £1.3 billion regeneration of Granton Waterfront is designed to make it easy for local people to get around and visitors to access the area.
“Making sure this new section joins up with future active travel routes is essential in ensuring pedestrian and cyclist priority where we can. This allows people to choose clean, sustainable modes of transport while supporting our net zero 2030 goals, improving air quality and reducing congestion.
“I’d like to thank local people for their patience while we carried out the work and have no doubt that the route’s completion will be of great benefit to everyone using it.”
The project was funded with more than £1,000,000 from The Scottish Government, through the Places for Everyone programme managed by Walk Wheel Cycle Trust (formerly Sustrans).

Christmas cards for charity
Cards for Good Causes urges shoppers to visit its festive pop-up shop at St John’s Church on Princes Street, which is an easy way to support charities.
In the shop they sell Christmas cards, gifts, decorations, and gift wrap. Every purchase helps to support local and national charities, and provides a boost to St John’s Church. There are cards, gifts, stocking fillers or unique Secret Santa ideas on offer.
Hundreds of visitors have already been to the shop, but it is now time to make a visit and “shop with purpose”. Every purchase helps to support over 70 charities.
Christine Ansell, CEO at Cards for Good Causes, said: “Every purchase from our pop-up shops provides vital funding to our charities and local community spaces. From cancer care to mental health support, children’s services, animal welfare and much more, our cards and gifts really do help to make a difference. With just two weeks to go, this is a wonderful way to make Christmas meaningful.”

Dark Side of the Moon – Planetarium Lates
Pink Floyd’s music and the comfort of the Dynamic Earth auditorium transport audiences away from the Christmas madness. Experience the 1973 album in the planetarium with 360° visuals of space and the solar system.
The almost one hour long session (the album is just more than 50 minutes long) makes up a music show combines with science. This version was created in 2023 by NSC Creative, the producers who also created the ‘We Are…’ series of films shown at Dynamic Earth.
DSOM was commissioned to mark the 50th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s landmark album, and the show combines cutting-edge visuals with the remastered music. The show premiered at the London Planetarium as a tribute to the band’s legacy.
For Floyd fans go and enjoy. It is only a short journey but it takes you out of this world. There are two dates left on 14 and 21 December.

Watsonians fundraising
Watsonian Football Club has raised £10,000 for Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity (ECHC) for the second consecutive year, during its ongoing 150th anniversary celebrations.
The donation, generated through a series of commemorative events, was raised primarily at the club’s landmark 150th Anniversary Dinner, where players, supporters, alumni, and partners came together in a memorable evening of celebration and generosity.
Richard Kelly, President of Watsonian FC, said: “As we celebrate 150 years of our club’s history, it has been incredibly important to us that this milestone reflects not only where we have come from, but what we stand for today. The generosity shown by our members and supporters at the 150th Dinner was truly incredible. Raising £10,000 for Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity allows us to play a small part in supporting the children and families who rely on the extraordinary care they provide.”
